Early December is a perfect time to start holiday shopping, and the annual Great Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco is the perfect place to start.
Local residents can join the celebration by strolling down London streets of the 1860s, replete with hoop-skirted ladies, dandy military men, street urchins and chimney sweeps. Buy trinkets at apothecary stores, rare books establishments and Victorian lingerie boutiques; eat heartily on roasted turkey and beef, British pasties and mash; and have your fill of raspberry trifle, shortbread and tea.
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the UC Davis Extension program is sponsoring a trip to the fair at the Cow Palace in Daly City on Saturday, Dec. 1. The bus will leave at 9 a.m. from the UCD Extension parking lot. The cost is $75 for OLLI members and guests, who must register with the OLLI office.
