A bike ride to raise awareness and funds to fight Friedreich’s Ataxia is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, starting in Davis.
FA is a debilitating, life-shortening degenerative neuromuscular disease typically affecting children and young adults.
Kyle Bryant was diagnosed at age 17. During his junior year at UC Davis, he met a researcher at UCD who was studying FA.
“It was the first time I was filled with hope,” Bryant said.
Bryant became part of Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research to find a cure for FA. In 2009, Bryant created Ride Ataxia, cycling events across the country that have raised more than $1 million in research grants.
Ride Ataxia Norcal starts at 7:30 a.m. May 5 at the Veterans’ Memorial Center, 203 E. 14th St., Davis. Registration for races between 15 and 68 miles can be found at www.rideataxia.org/norcal. Registration is limited to the first 600 participants. Same day registration is permitted only if space is available.
