Bring bells for Saturday’s Day of Peace

By From page A11 | September 20, 2013

The Davis Phoenix coalition was formed in response to the March beating of Mikey Partida, a hate crime for which the defendant has accepted a plea deal and will spend five years in Yolo County Jail.

The coalition asks the community to bring bells to help celebrate the International Day of Peace at noon Saturday at the Davis Farmers Market. Peace Day provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date.

The group will have a table set up at the market in Central Park, Fourth and C streets, with pinwheels for children to put together and balloons to give away. Mayor Joe Krovoza will speak just before noon and then together with others around the world, those gathered will ring bells.

The mission of the Phoenix Coalition is to engage the Davis community in ongoing efforts to eliminate intolerance, prevent hate-motivated violence and cultivate a broader civic culture that embraces and promotes all aspects of the diverse Davis community.
