California Highway Patrol officers say unsafe speed caused a collision Tuesday on the Yolo Causeway that snarled traffic in both directions.
Officer Ken Walter said the crash occurred at 1:30 p.m. as 21-year-old Bryan Chafee of El Macero drove a 2001 Lexus eastbound on Interstate 80 “well above an unsafe speed.” He reportedly lost control of his vehicle on the wet roadway, spun around and slid underneath a box delivery truck.
The truck, carrying a load of Otis Spunkmeyer cookie dough, overturned onto its side and partially blocked the freeway, Walter said. The driver, Rio Linda resident Jerome Bezila, 60, was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center after complaining of pain.
Chafee was not injured in the crash, which Walter said led to traffic backups on both sides of the freeway for about an hour.
As for the damaged delivery truck, “they had to take it off the freeway to salvage the cookie dough,” Walter said.
