The entire community is invited to a free family festival on Sunday, Oct. 2, to celebrate Davis’ bid to break its own Guinness world record for the longest single line of bicycles in motion.
The festival will get under way after the first riders cross the finish line of the World’s Greatest Bicycle Parade, at about 11 a.m. It will continue until 2:30 p.m. in Central Park, Fourth and C streets.
The festival is open to the entire community, and is not restricted only to bicyclists from the parade, said Dave Rosenberg, a member of the Bicycle Parade Committee of the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge, the sponsoring organization.
Central Park will feature bounce houses and the community carousel in the Kids’ Zone. Teenagers and young adults will enjoy an unusual new feature — Gizmo’s Rolling Video Games — a van full of electronic games and big screens.
The U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame will be open to visitors, and hungry visitors will be able to purchase lunch from Raj Indian Cuisine, The Hotdogger, Caffé Italia and Fat Face Popsicles. Sudwerk will open a beer garden for adults.
Bands and musical groups will provide live entertainment throughout the festival.
In 2010, the city of Davis, led by the Davis Odd Fellows Lodge, set a Guinness world record in the category of “longest single line of bicycles,” with 916 moving bikes in a line. The Odd Fellows have announced an effort to break the record on Oct. 2, beginning precisely at 10:02 a.m.
The route is expected to take about one hour to pedal, ending in front of the Odd Fellows Hall at 415 Second St., about a block and a half from the park.
Folks who wish to register to ride in the parade and help set the record must do so online, at http://worldsgreatestbicycleparade.com/registration. The first 1,500 riders will be accepted.
Community members also are asked to volunteer to help out on the days leading up to the parade or on parade day; sign up at http://worldsgreatestbicycleparade.com/volunteer. Bike parade rules — established by Guinness — can be reviewed at http://worldsgreatestbicycleparade.com/parade-rules.
Registration costs $10 per person, or $20 with a commemorative T-shirt. All proceeds, after expenses, will be donated to the Davis Schools Foundation.
