UC Davis will host “An ‘Eyeconic’ Weekend,” a free celebration of roses, this weekend. Sponsored by the California Center for Urban Horticulture, Foundation Plant Services and their partners and sponsors, the free rose extravaganza will have workshops, tours and a plant sale.

Demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday will highlight methods for growing roses, featuring new rose varieties, best pruning practices, proper plant placement, planting techniques, pest management and disease identification of these hardy and colorful flowering shrubs.

In the afternoon, tours of the brilliant colors of the 8 acres of rose fields and more than 400 rose cultivars are sure to be a magnificent sight.

At the rose sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., choose from 32 varieties of classic and novel roses. Free mini-floribunda roses will be given to the first 250 attendees on both days.

The event will take place at Foundation Plant Services, 455 Hopkins Road on the UCD campus. To reach the site, take Hutchison Drive west of Highway 113, head right toward the new West Village apartments at the first traffic circle, then west again onto Hutchison at the second traffic circle.

Turn left on Hopkins Road at the second line of olive trees. Foundation Plant Services is the third complex of buildings on the right. If you reach the UCD Airport, you have gone too far.
