Church volunteers show they care

From rototilling to painting to weeding to cleaning, an estimated 500 volunteers from eight churches in Davis fanned out across the community and the region Saturday to participate in iCare.
The volunteers worked at more than 20 project sites — including schools, parks and community organizations — in Davis, Woodland and Yolo County on Friday and Saturday, and more work will continue Sunday.
This is the third iCare event, which was born out of a meeting four years ago involving seven Davis pastors. The pastors challenged their parishioners to get out of their buildings and into the neighborhoods around them.
“We have expanded iCare to three days of serving, but an event is not our ultimate goal,” said the Rev. John Richert, the pastor at Discovery Church. “We seek to develop an everyday lifestyle of serving the people around us.
“There are many benefits from the one-day event — tangible unity among churches in Davis, the practical help that 20-plus projects provide to organizations throughout the city, and conversations we have while Christians and non-Christians work side by side,” he continued.
Added Jann Murray-García, an iCare participant, “We just want to ‘show up’ in the community we are part of, as Jesus Christ did, in practical, tangible ways.”
