Across the finish line, it’s Lucas Frerichs, chair of the city’s planning commission to win the campaign contributions race, raking in $31,608 since February when he announced his campaign.
All five candidates — vying for three seats on the City Council on June 5 — turned in financial statements Thursday, revealing contributions and expenditures for the period between March 18 and May 19, in addition to their campaign-wide totals.
Frerichs, 32, who was the last to announce his campaign, amassed $20,003 over the two-month stretch, while spending $16,053 of that total over the term as well. He finishes with an ending cash balance of $10,639.
On his list of campaign contributors were two of the three employee groups in Sacramento who authored the mailer attacking incumbent Councilwoman Sue Greenwald and her campaign three weeks ago, Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 447 and IBEW Local 340.
When asked about the contributions, Frerichs said as soon as he learned of the mailer, he gave back the money.
“Of course (I returned the money),” Frerichs said in a text message late Thursday night. “I had no idea about the mailer against Sue, and once that happened I returned them right away.”
Frerichs is a policy consultant at the State Capitol, and deals specifically with natural resource issues.
Incumbent council member Dan Wolk, 34, came in just behind Frerichs with $27,021 generated over the course of his campaign.
Wolk had led the contribution race up until the most recent filing period, but was passed by Frerichs, accruing $7,352 this term.
Though, Wolk did spend $17,972 this filing period, which was the highest of all five candidates. His total expenditures come in at about $25,970, leaving him with a cash balance of $1,082.
Wolk works as deputy counsel for Solano County. He was appointed to the City Council in February 2011 after Don Saylor vacated his seat to join the Yolo County Board of Supervisors.
Newcomer Brett Lee, 46, also made a big move this filing term and came in third on the money list.
Lee generated $10,332 over the past two months — including a $6,850 loan.
For his campaign, Lee has built a war chest of $19,231, spending $18,840 of that overall total.
Lee, an industrial engineer who also works as a financial adviser, was the first to announce his candidacy back in October.
Fourth in campaign contributions is Greenwald, 64, who has brought in $13,675 over the course of her campaign. Greenwald is running for her fourth consecutive term on the dais, which includes one term as the city’s mayor from 2006-08.
Greenwald received $5,700 over the past two months and spent $9,873, leaving her with $3,673 of cash in hand. The incumbent has taken out $8,000 in loans to help finance her campaign.
Incumbent Stephen Souza, 56, rounds out the field with $11,848 in contributions for his campaign.
Souza, who runs Ultra Clean Pool Services in Davis, is running for his third consecutive term on the City Council.
The incumbent has spent $10,657, leaving him with $1,191 in cash on hand. This term, Souza generated $4,255 and spent $8,224.
In 2010, Mayor Joe Krovoza’s final contribution total came in at $20,468 and expenditures ran up to $28,134. Mayor Pro Tem Rochelle Swanson raised $24,032 and spent a grand total of $23,926.
Davis has a campaign contribution limit of $100 per person. One more filing period awaits the candidates, as they must file again on Wednesday.
