The city of Davis Human Relations Commission has extended the nomination period for this year’s Thong Hy Huynh Memorial Awards in two categories: Young Humanitarian and Civil Rights Advocacy.
The awards honor individuals and community organizations who have made significant contributions in resolving or improving civil and human rights issues in the city of Davis.
The nomination period has been extended to 4 p.m. Friday, April 20. Nomination forms are available online at www.cityofdavis.org; at City Hall, 23 Russell Blvd.; or by calling at (530) 757-5602.
The Young Humanitarian Award is given to a student in grades K-16 (elementary through postsecondary or equivalent) for significant efforts to improve the quality of life in Davis. Qualified nominees will have directly addressed the needs of specific groups within the community in the areas of human or civil rights or education.
The Civil Rights Advocacy Award is given to an individual or organization for significant efforts and achievement in any of the following areas: speaking on behalf of, and giving voice to, the disadvantaged and disempowered; promoting positive human relations, civil rights, cultural awareness or peaceful means of
conflict resolution; or improving the quality of life for Davis residents through the areas of health, human services, housing or employment.
The awards honor the memory of Thong Hy Huynh, a 16-year-old student at Davis High School who was fatally stabbed in a racially motivated attack near campus.
