Meet city’s new bike coordinator Friday
Following a nationwide search, the city of Davis has welcomed Dave “DK” Kemp as its new bicycle and pedestrian coordinator. Kemp began his new duties Monday.
Community members are invited to meet Kemp at an informal reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, 303 Third St., in the southwest corner of Central Park.
Kemp spent the last six years developing a comprehensive bicycle program for the city of Fort Collins, Colo. Under his leadership, Fort Collins rose from a silver-level designation to a gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community and is poised to attain the platinum-level status within the coming year.
“I look forward to working with the community as it continues its progress toward becoming a world-class bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly city,” he said in a news release.
Kemp’s experience also includes four years at New Belgium Brewing Company from 2000 to 2004, where he co-conceptualized and implemented the brewery’s bicycle signature event, the “Tour de Fat.”
He earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and tourism, specializing in interpretation, from Colorado State University and received a certificate from Portland State University’s Innovative Bicycle & Pedestrian Initiative Program, concentrating on bicycle and pedestrian planning and design techniques.
The Davis bicycle and pedestrian coordinator position has been vacant since September, when Tara Goddard left to pursue her Ph.D. at Portland State University.

Did anyone in Davis notice this position was vacant for four months? Oh well it’s just another city employee who will cost around $100,000/year. Davis is flush with cash.
The way I see it, another person is now employed.
Bicycling is a fantastic success in Davis. Even if you’re blind to the benefits of bicycling for your own health and your own pocketbook and the environment, they are great for property values in Davis and the public works for them is cheaper than for cars. It is also crystal clear that the city needs a bicycle coordinator to make good decisions. So yeah, this guy is one more employee, but if he does even a half decent job, he will be worth 10 times his salary for your property values and your taxes. This is a crucial position, even if the city did survive on autopilot for a few months.
