The two candidates for Yolo County clerk-recorder-assessor have largely financed their own campaigns, with two-thirds of incumbent Freddie Oakley’s donations coming in the form of a loan from her husband and all of David Schwenger’s donations coming from himself and his wife.
Schwenger, a senior real property appraiser who has worked in the county assessor’s office for the past seven years, reported $20,778 in campaign contributions on financial disclosure statements due May 22 — all of it from Schwenger himself and his wife, Rebecca.
Schwenger said Wednesday he was willing to accept outside donations but didn’t seek them out.
“I have not actively solicited funding,” he said. “Rather, I have sought voter support with sign locations and campaigning.”
Oakley, meanwhile, reported $18,093 in donations, with $11,690 in the form of loans from her husband, UC Davis professor emeritus John Oakley, and the remaining $6,403 coming from other donors, including a number of UCD professors and local officials like county Supervisors Jim Provenza and Duane Chamberlain, most of whom donated $100 or $200.
Oakley, currently the county’s clerk-recorder and registrar of voters, is seeking her fourth term in what is now a newly expanded office. County supervisors voted last year to combine her office with that of the county assessor’s office. Current County Assessor Joel Butler decided not to run for the office and instead has endorsed Schwenger.
With less than a week to go until Election Day, Schwenger had a little over $2,200 on hand as of May 17, while Oakley had $5,518.
