Colombian Carnival comes to Davis stage

Local residents will enjoy a taste of Colombian Carnival at the 12th annual Colombian Serenade, “The Barranquilla Moon,” on Saturday, Dec. 10. The event will pay tribute to the late Joe Arroyo and Estercita Forero, two music icons of Carnival music who made their home in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Performances slated to grace the Brunelle Performance Hall stage at Davis High School, 315 W. 14th St., include live Colombian Folkloric music by Los Primos as well as a live music and dance combo featuring the Semillitas Youth Folkloric Dance Troupe.

Invited guests from Fiesta Dance‘N Fitness will perform dance-hall hip-hop and Afro-Colombian dance numbers. Children will be featured as piano soloists, and a piano and violin duet is planned.

Finally, Colombia Viva, celebrating its 10th anniversary, will light up the stage with salsa dancing.

The event, presented by the UEPAGE Foundation, runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children under 12, available in advance at The Avid Reader, 617 Second St., and Watermelon Music, 207 E St. Tickets at the door will be $15 and $10, respectively.

A portion of funds raised will be donated to support a micro-credit program through Funbichocó that provides micro-loans to women and their families forcibly displaced due to violence in Chocó, Colombia.
