Georgeanne Brennan and Ann Evans, authors of “The Davis Farmers Market Cookbook,” will be at the The Avid Reader at 1 p.m. Saturday to discuss the cookbook, the market and to provide tips for holiday entertaining. The bookstore is at 617 Second St. in downtown Davis.

“The Davis Farmers Market Cookbook” invites readers to shop and cook through the seasons with the authors as they share cooking tips, culinary passions, market lore and history.

More than just a collection of recipes, the book offers a “Basics” section that shows readers how to adapt eight recipes, from risotto to fruit pies, throughout the year. Organized by season, the chapters include more than 85 recipes, from appetizers to desserts, plus a selection of instructions for canning and preserving.

Photos of vendors, food and farms entice the reader into a visual visit to one of America’s favorite farmers’ markets and to cook in rhythm with the land’s bounty.

Evans is a co-founder of the Davis Farmers Market and the Davis Food Co-op, as well as a former mayor of Davis. She is a food and agriculture columnist for four periodicals in the Sacramento region, including The Davis Enterprise, and the coauthor of three books.

Brennan is an author, journalist, educator and consultant. She is the author of more than 30 cookbooks and garden books, as well as a memoir, “A Pig in Provence,” and has received both a James Beard and a Julia Child award. Her food features have appeared in such publications as Bon Appétit, Fine Cooking and Everyday with Rachael Ray.

She is a regular contributor to the award-winning San Francisco Chronicle food section, as well as a contributor to local publications such Edible Sacramento and The Davis Enterprise.
