Bicyclist injured in collision with car

Davis police say a car-versus-bike crash in West Davis early Friday underscores the importance of using proper bike safety equipment.

Lt. Glenn Glasgow said the bicyclist was turning from northbound Sycamore Lane onto Wake Forest Drive and traveled into the path of a southbound vehicle at about 12:45 a.m. The cyclist, 18-year-old Cody Kubat of Davis, was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Neither the driver, 22-year-old Sagar Jain, nor a passenger in the car was injured.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, said Glasgow, who noted that Kubat was not wearing a helmet and did not have proper lighting equipment on his bike. A bike headlamp is required by law when riding at night, and police also recommend helmets for riders over age 18, he said.
