Big losses tallied in ‘suspicious’ haystack fires

By From page A2 | August 20, 2013

The two fires that destroyed two large haystacks over the weekend resulted in an estimated $50,000 loss to the property owners involved, according to the Davis Fire Department.

Fire investigators have labeled the fires “suspicious” in nature, given their nearly simultaneous breakout late Friday night.

Both involved stacks of about 100 hay bales each, one at County Road 102 south of County Road 29 and the other on County Road 99B south of County Road 29. One was reported at 11:10 p.m., the other about 15 minutes later.

Fire Department spokeswoman Evelyn George said crews continue to monitor both fires, which were still smoldering as of Monday but considered under control with no threat of spreading. The fires sent smoke drifting into the Davis city limits on Saturday.

Anyone with information about the cause of the fires is asked to call the Davis Fire Department at 530-757-5684.
