A 13-year-old boy was killed early Thursday morning when a vehicle driven by his cousin crashed on Interstate 5 east of Woodland, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Reports indicate driver Sergio Gomez-Sandoval, 18, of Turlock, fell asleep at the wheel shortly before 5 a.m. as he traveled southbound near County Road 22. The vehicle, a 2013 Toyota Corolla, left the roadway and went down an embankment, rolling over several times before coming to rest in a field.
The boy, identified as Alejandro Galvan Torres of Delhi, suffered fatal injuries after being partially ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP reported. His father, 39-year-old Galvan Audel, also of Delhi, and Gomez-Sandoval both sustained minor wounds in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation, though neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be factors in the incident.
