Car v. train crash leads to DUI arrest
An Elk Grove man lost not only his freedom Sunday morning following a drunken driving arrest, but also his car when it totaled by a freight train.
California Highway Patrol officers say Roberto Mercado, 42, was under the influence of alcohol when his Chevy Tahoe drifted off the roadway and struck a wooden barrier at County Roads 105 and 32A east of Davis at about 3:20 a.m. Despite the collision, Mercado drove onto the railroad tracks, which caused the vehicle to become stuck, CHP Officer Cindy Leal said.
Mercado walked away the vehicle, which then was struck by the freight train. Investigating officers said Mercado showed signs of intoxication and took him into custody. He was booked at the Yolo County Jail, Leal said.
