California Highway Patrol officers are investigating a solo vehicle crash that killed a passenger Friday morning west of Woodland.
Officer Ken Walter said emergency personnel responded at 5:40 a.m. to Highway 16 west of County Road 96, where a 1994 Nissan Sentra had struck a tree.
Witnesses told the CHP that the westbound Sentra had been passing another vehicle and was returning to the westbound lane when the driver lost control and ran off the north side of the road, Walter said. The car’s passenger side collided with the tree.
Both the driver, 24-year-old Ezequiel Alvarez of Woodland, and his male passenger suffered major injuries, “but the passenger took the brunt of the impact,” Walter said.
A fire crew had to extricate both men from the vehicle due to the extensive damage, Walter said. They were transported to the UC Davis Medical Center, where the passenger, who was in his mid-20s, died from his injuries.
CHP officials said the victim had not been positively identified as of late this morning.
Neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be factors in the crash, Walter said, and no other vehicles were involved.
