Authorities are investigating what prompted a 28-year-old Sacramento man to flee a crash scene Thursday night, an act that resulted in his death when he was struck by another car.
Juan Jesus Onate-Flores had been involved in an accident shortly before 9 p.m. on eastbound Highway 50 near Harbor Boulevard in West Sacramento, according to the California Highway Patrol. He apparently lost control of his Ford Explorer, which came to rest on its roof in the freeway’s fast lane.
Onate-Flores was able to exit the vehicle, and he chatted briefly with two good Samaritans who stopped to help, the CHP said. Suddenly, he fled from the scene, climbing over the center divider and running into the westbound side of the freeway — and into the path of a Toyota Corolla whose driver was unable to avoid hitting him.
Emergency personnel pronounced Onate-Flores dead at the scene. The driver of the Corolla, 37-year-old Yaeng Vang of Suisun City, was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento with minor injuries.
“Alcohol is a factor” in the incident, said Yolo County Chief Deputy Coroner Robert LaBrash, who was unable to specify Onate-Flores’ blood-alcohol content. His cause of death was listed as multiple blunt-impact injuries.
