Davis police thwarted a car burglary early Tuesday, an incident in which one officer fired his gun to disable the burglar’s car.

Lt. Glenn Glasgow said an officer was patrolling the South Davis area at about 5:20 a.m. when he heard a car alarm sounding near Davis Swim and Fitness, 303 Ensenada Way. When he pulled into the parking lot, he spotted a man — later identified as 27-year-old Marcus Ford — running from the area, stopping him as he got into his vehicle to flee.

Glasgow said the man started his car, but the officer turned off the ignition, and a struggle ensued.

“During the struggle, Ford restarted his vehicle and attempted to drive away with the officer still in the car,” Glasgow said in a news release. “An arriving Davis police sergeant saw the officer and Ford engaged in a violent struggle inside Ford’s vehicle.”

The sergeant, identified only as a 14-year veteran of the Davis Police Department, fired his service weapon at Ford’s car, hitting a rear tire and causing it to stop, Glasgow said. The officers used a Taser to subdue him after he allegedly continued to resist arrest.

Ford and the initial officer suffered minor injuries during the struggle, Glasgow said. Ford, of Yuba City, was lodged at the Yolo County Jail on charges stemming from the incident as well as a felony warrant from Sutter County charging him with possessing a stolen vehicle.

Glasgow said “miscellaneous items” were stolen from the burglarized car, which belonged to a customer of the fitness club.
