UPDATE: An elderly Vacaville woman has died from injuries she sustained in a vehicle accident Saturday afternoon at East Covell Boulevard and Baywood Lane, the Davis Police Department reported Sunday.

Ruth D. Morales, who had celebrated her 85th birthday on Friday, was pronounced dead shortly before 9 p.m. at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, according to the Sacramento County coroner’s office. Investigators said Morales required extrication from her vehicle, which had crashed into a tree at the East Davis intersection shortly after 2 p.m.

Armando Gonzalez, 39, of Woodland, was arrested on suspicion of causing both the fatal collision and a second crash that occurred moments later at East Covell Boulevard and Pole Line Road, police reported. He was lodged at the Yolo County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run.

Davis police were investigating two separate injury accidents on Covell Boulevard on Saturday evening and had arrested an individual suspected of being involved in both collisions.

Sgt. Frank Tenedora said the first accident occurred at about 2 p.m. Saturday when two cars collided at the intersection of Covell and Baywood Lane. The driver of one of the cars, whom Tenedora declined to identify, then allegedly left the scene and continued west on Covell before colliding with another car at the intersection of Covell and Pole Line Road.

The driver involved in both collisions was later arrested on a felony hit-and-run charge, Tenedora said. He declined to identify the driver because the investigation was still in its early stages.

Davis Fire Capt. Brian Lynch said the first crash at Baywood and Covell resulted in major injuries to one individual who was extricated from the car by firefighters using the jaws of life and who was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Lynch said two other victims suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The crashes left portions of westbound Covell shut down Saturday evening as members of the Davis Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team worked the accident scenes in both locations.

“They’re going to be out there for a quite a while,” Tenedora said.
