Police investigate report of cab robbery
A local cab driver reported being beaten and robbed just before he crashed his taxi into two parked cars early Friday morning, Davis police said.
Lt. Paul Doroshov said officers got a phone call from the 35-year-old victim at about 3:25 a.m. Though his details were vague, he reported that he was beaten from behind by “multiple” passengers as he drove in the area of Eighth and M streets.
“As a result he crashed his cab into two parked cars,” Doroshov said.
Police reports about the incident remained incomplete as of Friday evening. However, a witness to the incident told The Enterprise that the cab also drove through a fence and came to rest in the front yard of a residence.
The taxi driver apparently left the scene on foot and walked to his South Davis home, where he contacted authorities, Doroshov said. He was later taken to the UC Davis Medical Center for treatment of a laceration to the back of his head.
It was unclear where the passengers had been picked up, and whether the victim’s injury was a result of the alleged beating or the crash. Doroshov said further information about the suspects is being withheld pending further investigation.
Doroshov said the incident does not appear to be connected to last year’s assault on a Sikh cab driver in West Sacramento, which was prosecuted as a hate crime.
“There’s no racial component to this,” Doroshov said.
