A 28-year-old Sacramento woman was killed early Thursday morning when her car and another vehicle collided head-on in West Sacramento, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Cassandra Caruthers was at the wheel of a Saturn Ion that was either traveling in the wrong direction or had become disabled facing the wrong way on eastbound Interstate 80 near Reed Avenue at about 2 a.m., Officer Bryan Konvalin said. The Saturn collided with a Mercedes Benz, causing both vehicles to block the roadway.

Caruthers had to be extricated from the wreckage and died from her injuries at the scene, Konvalin said. The driver of the Mercedes, 66-year-old Koffi Francis Desouza of Rocklin, had minor injuries but declined medical aid.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Woodland CHP office at 530-662-4685.
