Yolo County law-enforcement officers conducted compliance checks on more than 100 sexual offenders — arresting nine — over a two-day period as part of the county’s annual “Operation Vigilance” program, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday.
“Operation Vigilance” began five years ago with the goal to protect Yolo County citizens by ensuring that sex offenders who live within the county are complying with the laws and probation directives.
This year, 120 law-enforcement officers from 15 local, state and federal agencies investigated 110 of Yolo County’s sexual offenders, most of whom were previously convicted of rape, child molestation and possession of child pornography.
While 86 percent of the sex offenders investigated were in compliance, nine were arrested for various violations, including possessing pornographic material, possessing children’s clothing or possessing drugs or alcohol. Five were from West Sacramento, two were from Woodland, and two were adults who had committed offenses as juveniles.
Coordinated by the DA’s Child Sexual Predator Unit, the operation used specialized computer forensic examiners to analyze the offenders’ computer devices during the home visits, searching 214 such devices and seizing 22 during the two-day sweep.
“The fact that nearly nine out of 10 of our sex offenders were in compliance shows that collectively we have been successful on a daily basis of supervising sex offenders in the county,” District Attorney Jeff Reisig said. “But each year during Operation Vigilance we catch a number of these offenders through face-to-face contacts and because of the efforts of our highly trained computer forensic experts.”
