California Highway Patrol officers found themselves slammed during the morning commute hour Tuesday, responding to six mishaps within a 20-minute time span.
Only one person was injured, while another was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, CHP Officer Cindy Leal said.
The string of events began at 8:30 a.m., when 54-year-old Charisse Johnson of Winters struck a telephone pole at County Road 31 east of County Road 95. She was transported to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment of pain to her shoulder, leg and ribs.
Ten minutes later, a big rig traveling westbound on Interstate 80 near the Webster interchange dropped a piece of metal, which struck a Honda Civic. The incident has been classified as a hit-and-run, though Leal said it’s unclear whether the big rig driver knew the metal had fallen.
Another 10 minutes later, at 8:50 a.m., officers arrested 60-year-old Jeanne Lupien of Sacramento on suspicion of DUI after her car ran off the road on westbound I-80 at Webster and struck a sign. Leal said she was under the influence of prescribed medication.
At about the same time, officers were summoned to a three-vehicle hit-and-run collision on eastbound Highway 50 near Harbor Boulevard in West Sacramento. Leal said a white minivan fled the scene after striking a Honda Civic, which was then pushed into another Civic. No injuries were reported.
There also were no injuries stemming from a six-vehicle crash that occurred in the same location about a minute later. According to Leal, the driver of a Lexus made an unsafe lane change, causing a chain-reaction collision involving at least five other vehicles.
