Smoke, but no fire, in Davis

A strong smell of smoke detected in Davis on Tuesday — particularly in the east and south areas of town — apparently drifted in from the Woodland area, according to the Davis Fire Department.

Woodland fire officials said they had not responded to any active fires Tuesday afternoon and noted that the smoke may have come from a control burn in one of the area’s many agricultural fields.

The Davis Fire Department reported receiving more than two dozen calls about the smoky smell between 3 and 4 p.m. The pungent scent also prompted Davis police to issue a Nixle alert notifying residents that it was unable to identify the source of the smoke.

Davisites can sign up to receive the free alerts via cell phone text message and/or email at www.nixle.com or at the Davis Police Department website, http://police.cityofdavis.org.
