Suspect in toddler’s death pleads not guilty

By From page A2 | June 13, 2014

Nearly five months after his arrest, a Sacramento man pleaded not guilty this week to charges stemming from the fatal assault of his girlfriend’s toddler son in Davis.

Darnell D’Angelo Dorsey is charged with assault on a child resulting in death, accused of inflicting fatal injuries on 20-month-old Cameron Morrison while caring for the child at his girlfriend’s Olive Drive residence on Jan. 22. The boy died three days later at the UC Davis Medical Center.

Police arrested Dorsey the night Cameron was hospitalized, but he did not enter a plea until his court hearing this past week. He is due back in court July 22 for a pre-hearing conference and Sept. 15 for a preliminary hearing, where a judge will determine whether there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to trial.

Dorsey, 21, remains in custody at the Yolo County Jail. He also faces a charging enhancement in connection with his 2009 conviction in a Davis robbery case.
