Three from UC Davis are named to California bench
Gov. Jerry Brown has appointed three UC Davis graduates to judgeships in three California counties.
* Shelyna V. Brown, 41, of San Jose, has been appointed to the bench in the Santa Clara Superior Court. Shelyna Brown has served as an attorney in the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office since 1997.
She earned her juris doctorate degree from Santa Clara University School of Law and a bachelor of arts degree from UCD. A Democrat, she fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Eugene M. Hyman.
* Donald I. Segerstrom Jr., 60, of Sonora, has been appointed to the bench in the Tuolumne Superior Court. He has served as district attorney for Tuolumne County since 2001. Previously, he was a sole civil and criminal defense practitioner from 1989 to 2001.
Segerstrom served as a deputy district attorney for the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office from 1985 to 1988 and was a research attorney for the Third District Court of Appeal from 1981 to 1985.
He earned his juris doctorate degree from the UCD School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from Prescott College. A Democrat, he fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Douglas Boyack.
* Matthew P. Guasco, 53, of Ventura, has been appointed to the bench in the Ventura Superior Court. He has been a professional mediator and arbitrator since 2011.
Previously, he served as counsel for Arnold Bleuel LaRochelle Mathews and Zirbel LLP from 2008 to 2010, and Norman Dowler LLP from 2001 to 2008. Guasco was a sole practitioner for Innovative Mediation from 1998 to 2001.
He was an associate attorney for Engle Carobine Covner and Coats LLP from 1993 to 1998, and Lascher and Lascher from 1989 to 1993. Guasco served as a deputy public defender for the Marin County Public Defender’s Office from 1985 to 1989.
He earned his juris doctorate degree from Golden Gate University School of Law and a bachelor of arts degree from UCD. A Democrat, he fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge David W. Long.
Newly appointed Superior Court judges are paid an annual salary of $178,789.
