UCD law student dies of injuries from collision

A UC Davis law student has died from injuries she suffered early Wednesday after being hit by a truck while jogging in West Davis, police announced Thursday.

Megan Elizabeth Glanville, 25, was in her third year of law school, poised to graduate next May, said one of her professors, Lisa Ikemoto.

“She had a strong interest in health law and social justice issues,” said Ikemoto, who had Glanville as a student in three of her courses relating to reproductive rights, health care law and public health law. “She was well-liked and well-respected at the law school.”

Davis police Lt. Paul Doroshov said heavy fog may have played in a role in the fatal collision, which occurred at about 6:40 a.m. Wednesday as Glanville crossed Russell Boulevard near Lake Boulevard. Police said Glanville had been wearing athletic clothing and was believed to be taking a morning jog.

The driver, 61-year-old George Souza of Woodland, was traveling eastbound on Russell in a Ford pickup when the collision occurred, Doroshov said. Glanville, who suffered severe injuries including head trauma, was rushed to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where she died late Thursday morning.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be factors in the collision, Doroshov said. The incident remains under review by the police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team.

Formerly of Chico, Glanville had earned a bachelor of arts degree from UC San Diego before enrolling at UCD’s King Hall School of Law in 2009, according to campus officials.

Glanville had a low-key, wry sense of humor that her fellow law students appreciated, Ikemoto said. During class discussions she demonstrated a kind, thoughtful way of speaking to others, even if the topic at hand was potentially divisive.

“She could speak her mind in a way that encouraged others to engage with her,” Ikemoto said. “I liked her and cared about her — I think she will be very missed.”
