UCD student clings to life after West Davis collision

A 19-year-old UC Davis student remains on life support at a Sacramento hospital Monday night, two days after being struck by a car in West Davis, local police said.

It marks the third major pedestrian accident involving a University of California student to occur in the Davis area in about six weeks.

Lt. Paul Doroshov identified the student as Brennan Morrow, but friends of the victim have told The Enterprise that Morrow was transgender and went by the name Renne Lyra Morrow.

Morrow suffered major injuries to her body and head in the collision, which occurred at about 11 p.m. Saturday as she crossed the intersection of Arlington Boulevard and Shasta Drive on foot, Doroshov said.

Davis Fire Department officials said Morrow was transported by ambulance to the UC Davis Medical Center with two firefighters on board assisting with lifesaving efforts.

The driver, 62-year-old Patrice White of Davis, was traveling eastbound on Arlington Boulevard and struck Morrow as she entered the intersection, Doroshov said. It was unclear whether Morrow was in a crosswalk at the time.

“We’re still in the process of investigating that,” Doroshov said.

Doroshov said White, who stayed on the scene and cooperated with authorities, was not impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision. Emergency personnel, however, reported smelling “a strong odor of alcohol” on Morrow while treating her at the accident scene, he said.

“That’s definitely a factor we’re looking into,” Doroshov said. Morrow lives in that neighborhood and was en route to a friend’s home nearby, he added.

The incident is now being investigated by the Davis Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), which also is wrapping up its probe of a fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision that occurred just before Christmas.

Megan Elizabeth Glanville, a 25-year-old UCD law student, suffered fatal injuries when she struck by a truck as she jogged across Russell Boulevard at Lake Boulevard in West Davis on the morning of Dec. 21.

Glanville, who was slated to graduate from law school in May, died later that day. Investigators say heavy fog that morning may have been a factor in the collision.

Another pedestrian fatality occurred Jan. 21, when UC Berkeley student Vladimir Debabov, 21, was struck by a car while walking on Highway 113 just north of Davis. The driver fled the scene and is still being sought by the California Highway Patrol.

  1. He passed away last night around 8 pm.

  2. How awful! I hope for a speedy recovery. I feel for the driver, as well – I was in a similar situation in L.A. in the 1990s.

  3. It’s unfortunate to hear that she didn’t pull through, I send my condolences to the family.
Thank you all over at the Davis Enterprise for using her preferred pronouns and name.

  4. i live in west davis and people speed around that area alot i pull over when cars are tailgated me because im going the speed limit i have 2 kids and its a shame people are in a hurry life is too precios

  5. I have been passed regularly ON THE LEFT by speeding cars on ARlington Boulevard when I was doing 35 (the posted limit) and I have been hoping that death would not occur to make everyone realize the danger of this road, but sadly, my scariest premonitions about this have been realized. I live 1 block from where Brennan Morrow was killed , and I now worry daily if my kids will make it home from school with or without a crossing guard. And a word to those who choose to use the Humboldt-Oakenshield road option rather than the (ARLINGTON/SHAST) crosswalk 1/2 block out of your way are lucky to be alive. The intersection of Oakenshield and Arlington is a double blind curve when the sun is setting for the oncoming cars, and pedestrians there in the curve are EXTREMELY VULNERABLE AND NOT WISE. I have had near misses because of zero visibility and actually been yelled at by the pedestrians who I had never seen until I heard their voices. It’s everyone’s job to be safe, not just the cars, EVERYONE
