Fatigue may have been the cause of an early-morning crash Saturday that injured a Rancho Cordova woman on Interstate 80 in Davis, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Nicole Francisco, 18, was traveling in the slow lane of eastbound I-80 west of Mace Boulevard at about 5:10 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, her Toyota Scion crossed all lanes of traffic to the dirt center median, then swerved back across the freeway and struck a large tree as well as a fence.
Francisco suffered major injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle before being taken to the UC Davis Medical Center, the CHP reported. Officers said there was no evidence of drug or alcohol use, but Francisco may have fallen asleep at the wheel just prior to the crash.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information about the incident is asked to contact the Woodland CHP office at (530) 662-4685.
