Davis police say two unknown suspects drove a truck into the front doors of the local Target store early Sunday morning in a failed attempt to steal a cash machine.
Lt. Paul Doroshov said the two men were in a full-sized Dodge pickup that rammed into the store at 4601 Second St. at about 3 a.m. Sunday. The store was closed at the time.
After crashing the truck through two sets of glass entry doors, the suspects backed the vehicle up to the customer service counter, attached a cable to an automated teller machine, then tried to pull out the ATM with the truck.
Their plan failed, however, when the cable snapped in half.
“Both suspects fled on foot, leaving the truck in place,” Doroshov said. The truck had been reported stolen from a rural Yolo County ranch.
Officers and a police K-9 searched the area but were unable to find the suspects, described only as males wearing dark or black clothing. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Davis Police Department at (530) 747-5400.
Damage to the store was estimated at $100,000, from both the destroyed glass doors and floor tile that needs to be replaced, Doroshov said.
Despite the damage, business was not disrupted Sunday at the Mace Ranch store, Target manager Tiffany O’Brien said.
“We are up and running,” O’Brien said. “Our safety of our guests is top priority, and we’re glad nobody was hurt.”
Doroshov said the Target incident is not believed to be connected to an earlier break-in at the Verizon store in Davis Commons, where someone smashed the glass front door with a rock and stole about $1,700 worth of merchandise at about 2 a.m. Sunday.
Davis Commons is at First and E streets in downtown Davis.
