Cupcake cookoff fights bullying

By From page A4 | May 27, 2014

A cupcake “cook-off” to raise money for the Culture Co-op’s anti-bullying campaign is planned for noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in front of YoloBerry Yogurt and Let Them Eat Cake, 316 C St. in downtown Davis.

The goal of the campaign, “We All Have a Heritage,” is to promote respect for diversity/equity, cultural competency, literacy and quality education for all through workshops with community groups and assemblies at schools.

Competitors are asked to bake at least two dozen cupcakes, which will be judged by a panel of experts and sold to attendees for $1 each. Sales — plus the $10 entry fee — will go toward the campaign and a national kickoff event in New York City.

Winners will be based on audience feedback and judges’ evaluations. Prizes will be awarded for most popular, best presentation, best taste and best cupcake overall.

Judges are Freddie Oakley, Yolo County’s clerk/recorder; Moshe Rosenburg, a UC Davis food science professor; and a judge from Jake’s Desserts (formerly known as Sugar Daddies) in downtown Davis.

In addition to the cupcakes, refreshments and raffle tickets will be available for purchase.
