Davis Botanical Society hosts talk on Saudi Arabian plants
The Saudi Arabian deserts harbor distinctive plant life. If you’ve wanted to find out more about this interesting country and its desert flora, you’re invited to attend a free public lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, in the Blanchard Room at the Stephens Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St. in Davis.
Russell Huddleston will speak on “Vegetation and Restoration in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.” He is a graduate of UC Davis and works as a botanist and wetland ecologist with E2 Consulting Engineers. For the past five years, Huddleston has been working to re-establish native vegetation in selected areas of Saudi Arabia and promote ecosystem recovery through active restoration efforts in areas impacted by military activities during the first Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm).
His talk will provide an overview of the regional ecology, including the natural vegetation communities and flora of northeastern Saudi Arabia.
There will be a 10-minute Davis Botanical Society annual meeting and election at 6:45 p.m. and the talk will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will follow.
