Scholarships worth more than $1 million were presented to Davis High School’s graduating seniors Tuesday evening as their parents, teachers and peers celebrated their achievements at the annual Senior Awards Night ceremony. More than 200 members of the Class of 2013 were honored.

“It is a time to celebrate excellence — excellence in service, athletics, education and personal parenting,” Principal Jacqui Moore said in her opening remarks at the Brunelle Performance Hall on campus.

And celebrating excellence was exactly what DHS did. Presenters of awards all spoke very highly of the students receiving awards, and  in one case, a student complimented another student.

Adam King, when he received his Associated Student Body Special Award for leadership as ASB president, asked if he could say a few words. They were not for himself, but for “my right hand man, and my best friend, Jacob Moore.” Moore is the ASB vice president and a fellow senior.

King’s act of kindness was typical of the class’ attitude of humility and respect. When John Barovetto Memorial Award winner Rudy Buhlman received his award, he gave his presenter, Pat Barovetto, a bouquet of flowers.

But it was the Gordon H. True Service Cup recipients, Daniel Dutulescu and Grace Navarrot, who genuinely displayed kindness and a humble spirit — Navarrot is president of the Friendship Club on campus and Dutulescu is vice president. The True Cup is the highest honor bestowed upon two graduating seniors by their teachers and fellow students, awarded to a senior boy and girl who possess to the greatest degree the qualities of loyalty, service and citizenship.

Both received an immediate standing ovation as they received their cups.

“I see them in action every day. There are 1,900 students here, and they are willing to help at the ready on any day,” Moore said about the pair’s contributions to the campus.

Dutulescu was described as being a standout citizen who inspires peers and teachers alike to do their very best. “The world is simply a better place with him in it,” the principal added.

“The best thing about winning is that my best friend won,” Dutulescu said.

“I wish I could be like Cady in “Mean Girls”; everyone deserves a piece of this,” Navarrot said. “I really appreciate everyone who helped but didn’t get recognized.”

With a 4.75 weighted grade-point average, it was a no-brainier that Daniel Zhu won the Rotary Scholarship Cup, which is awarded to the DHS student at the top of the class.

Zhu’s interests include computer sciences, electrical engineering, chemistry and physics, all of which he hopes to incorporate into a great career one day. He plans to major in chemistry at Pomona College.

“I challenged myself with classes along with staying motivated and organized,” Zhu said of the secret to his success.

The Rotary Teacher Service Award went to science teacher Eric Bastin. Students wrote of him, “He isn’t afraid to talk about things, like preparing for his child’s birthday,” “It’s easy to learn from him because he uses a lot of hands-on activities in class” and “He’s awesome.”

As Moore read the descriptions, students on the stage behind her were nodding their heads in fervent agreement.

“The kids love him, and it’s not just because they can eat in class,” Moore said, explaining Bastin’s theory that students will remember something if they eat it. Hence, the calamari served after students dissected squid.

Students gave Bastin a standing ovation as he accepted his award, waving his thanks as he beat a hasty retreat back to his seat.
