Remember State Market downtown? Walden Books in University Mall? Gottschalks? Gayle’s Books?
Those and other bygone businesses are recalled in a new exhibit of plastic retail bags at the Hattie Weber Museum of Davis. The bags were collected and donated by Roberta Stevenson, a longtime Davis resident, Yolo County Historical Society board member, Genealogy Club member, Friends of the Library member and senior docent at the Hattie Weber Museum.
In the context of the recent single-use plastic bag controversy and the rate of business turnovers in Davis, some nostalgia seems appropriate.
The museum, at 445 C St. in Central Park, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. Children are welcome to ring the school bell, type on the typewriter, play with antique reproduction toys or play the piano.
Admission is free. Donations, especially those to help renovate the 1937 WPA building into a museum annex next door, are very welcome.
