Thousands of local residents turned out on a sizzling late-spring evening Thursday to Celebrate Davis!
The 11th annual event, presented by the Davis Chamber of Commerce, is designed to celebrate Davis as a great place to live, work, shop, play and learn. The event featured a business expo of 100 vendor booths, food, music and a Family Fun Zone, and was capped off with an aerial fireworks show.
The Chamber made a special effort this year to curb waste and promote environmental friendliness. Because parking is in short supply, families were encouraged to arrive by bicycle. Free and secure valet bike parking was available for those who arrived on two wheels.
In addition, the Chamber teamed up with the city of Davis to help make Celebrate Davis! a zero-waste event. Food vendors were asked to use recyclable or, even better, compostable serving ware and to avoid using Styrofoam containers and individual packages of condiments.
Waste stations set up throughout the park featured three bins — one for recycling, one for compostable materials and one for trash.
Businesses and organizations also were asked to limit their giveaways to environmentally friendly options like reusable bags, pencils made from recycled paper or seed packets.
