Young people who love to sing are invited to attend a one-week music camp July 14-20 at Camp Noel Porter near Tahoe City. The camp is organized and led by Janie E. Howard Knudsen, director of children’s choirs at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, Davis.

Space is available for up to 60 young campers from third through ninth grades. During the afternoon sessions, campers will enjoy the usual summer camp outdoor activities such as swimming at the beach, hiking and canoeing, rafting on the Truckee River and playing Capture the Flag. Evenings will be spent around the campfire.

But the mornings are all about music, Knudsen says.

The music curriculum is from “Voice for Life,” published by the Royal School of Church Music, and comprises individual instruction as well as small group and full choir rehearsals. The final “examination” is a performance at the end of the camp for family and friends, when also will receive their commemorative medal.

During the week, distinguished musicians have been invited to attend to offer master classes. Knudsen herself is a master with degrees in music and a promising opera career as a lyric soprano. She has enjoyed 25 years in Davis as a choir director and conductor.
