Yolo Basin foundation, a nonprofit wetlands and wildlife education organization, invites potential new volunteers to train as docents for the popular Discover the Flyway school program at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area.
Any member of the public with a passion for conservation, a desire to learn more about the local wetlands and an enthusiasm for sharing this with kindergarten through 12th-grade students is invited to sign up for the series of four training sessions.
The training is free to all participants. Space is limited, so reservations are required in advance.
In addition to introducing children to the wonders of wetlands, Yolo Basin Foundation’s Discover the Flyway docents enjoy volunteer appreciation field trips and other special activities throughout the year.
Prospective docents must be able to volunteer on weekdays at least once a month between September and June. The school program is offered Tuesdays through Fridays from 8 to approximately 11:30 a.m.
The class begins Tuesday, with subsequent hands-on training on Aug. 23, 28 and 30. All sessions run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Attendance at the first session is required, as well as at least two of the hands-on sessions.
The training will take place at the state Department of Fish and Game Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Headquarters in South Davis, 45211 County Road 32B (East Chiles Road).
