Yolo County Animal Services Section seeking the public’s help in locating a biting dog involved in an incident in the area of Northstar Park in Davis. A search of the area has been unsuccessful.

The incident occurred at about 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7. The victim, an adult female, had stopped to say hello to another woman and was bitten by the woman’s black Labrador retriever when she bent down to pet the dog. The dog owner said the Lab was healthy but walked away without exchanging information.

The dog owner was described as a female adult of average build, about 5-foot-7, with gray hair and wearing a gray/blue pullover shirt.

Anyone with information about this incident or the location of the dog or its owners is encouraged to report it to Animal Services at 530-668-5286 or [email protected], or the Davis Police Department at 530-747-5400. Identifying the dog to verify current rabies vaccination could allow the victim to avoid undergoing post-exposure rabies treatment.

Animal Services officials note that several recent bite cases have been the result of someone trying to pet a dog they do not know. The instinct of many dogs is to protect their owner and they may sense movement by a stranger toward that person as an aggressive gesture. Many owners also do not know until it’s too late that their dog may bite when a potential threat is perceived, so asking the owner if you can pet their dog does not assure that the dog will not bite.

Dog owners also are reminded that if their dog bites someone, it is their responsibility to report it to Yolo County Animal Services in order for vaccinations to be verified.
