“Dogtoberfest,” a fundraiser to support acquisition of a new dog for the Davis Police Department’s K-9 unit, is planned for 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, at the Odd Fellows Hall, 415 Second St. in downtown Davis.

The event will be a traditional Oktoberfest featuring food, beer and live music. General admission tickets are $20 each and VIP tickets are $40. Tickets are available at The Avid Reader, 617 Second St., and Common Grounds, 2171 Cowell Blvd., Suite D.

“Police dogs suitable for K-9 units are special dogs that receive rigorous training,” said Dody Black, a longtime member of the Odd Fellows and a coordinator of the Dogtoberfest. “Needless to say, these dogs are expensive, but they provide an invaluable part of police protection for our community.”

The special dogs that are typically trained for police work include German shepherds and Belgian Malinois. They are trained at facilities in Eastern Europe and can cost upwards of $20,000.

Once in the United States, the dogs are paired with a human partner, and undergo further training. Davis’ current K-9 officer — named Hurricane (aka “Cane”) — is due to retire soon.

“The Dogtoberfest is a going to be great fun for those who attend,” said Odd Fellow Ann Carroll, “but it’s also a way for us, as citizens of this town, to do our part to help our Police Department protect our community.”
