Through July 10: Action photos from this spring’s Amgen Tour of California as well as pictures from other cycling races will be exhibited at the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, 303 Third St. in downtown Davis. The photos were taken by Davis resident Mark Adkison. The Hall of Fame is open from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Admission ranges from $3 to $5. For more information, visit http://www.usbhof.org.

Friday, July 1: Portlander Brooke Parrott will sing at Sophia’s Thai Kitchen, 129 E St. in downtown Davis. She’s in the midst of a summerlong tour of the West Coast.

Since releasing her debut album, “Another City,” in 2008, Parrott has been honing her songwriting in London. She recently shared the stage with the likes of John Parish, Darrell Scott, Robert Forster (Go-Betweens), The Wooden Sky and Frontier Ruckus. A single from her album garnered attention last year when it was featured on T-Mobile phones worldwide.

Monday, July 4: The Davis Bike Club hosts its annual Fourth of July Davis Criterium, a holiday institution in downtown Davis since 1976. The event features all-day racing for male and female cyclists of all ages and skill levels, including a children’s fun race. The event is known for its technical, eight-corner course. The start/finish line is at Third and F streets. Past winners include Greg Lemond, Mike Sayers, Dave McCook and Nathan Dahlberg. For details, visit http://www.davisbikeclub.org.

Wednesday, July 6: Simmons Buntin and Dorine Jennette are the featured writers for the Poetry Night Reading Series at 8:30 p.m. on the Bistro 33 patio at Third and F streets. The Poetry Night Reading Series, hosted by Andy Jones, takes place at 8:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month at Bistro 33 and at 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month at the John Natsoulas Gallery, 521 First St.

There is an open microphone segment after the main reading. Visit http://www.poetryindavis.com to sign up for the Poetry Night mailing list.

Friday, July 8: Second Friday ArtAbout is a treat for both the eyes and ears, thanks to live music on the E Street and G Street plazas. The event is an evening of art viewing and artists’ receptions at galleries and businesses in downtown Davis and beyond. All events are free and open to the public. Many include refreshments, live music and a chance to talk with featured artists. For more information, visit http://www.davisdowntown.com

Saturday, July 9: Longtime local musician Bill Scholer and his band, Waiting For Bruce, will perform at a concert  to benefit victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Scholer plans to move to Japan to join his wife Karla, who is teaching elementary school at a U.S. naval base in Yokosuka. A silent auction also is planned.

The event will run from 7 to 10 p.m. at the John Natsoulas Gallery, 521 First St. in downtown Davis. Admission is $10, payable at the door. For more information, contact Bill or Karla Scholer at (707) 966-0139 or [email protected]

Friday-Sunday, July 8-10: A Sidewalk Sale features at least 50 retail and service businesses. The tradition of a Sidewalk Sale in downtown Davis is more than three decades old. A list of participating businesses can be found at http://www.davisdowntown.com.

Saturday-Sunday, July 9-10: Livestrong Challenge, fundraising bike races to support cycling icon Lance Armstrong’s nationwide crusade against cancer. An estimated 1,400 riders will participate in one of four professionally supported rides of 20, 45, 70 and 105 miles. The Livestrong Challenge is one of the premiere bicycling events in the nation, city of Davis Public Relations Manager Bob Bowen says.

An integral part of the event is a free Livestrong “Village on the Green” in Davis’ Central Park. It will feature many health-related displays, booths from event sponsors and food vendors, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 9. The races begin at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, July 10, and the village will be open thereafter for post-race food and refreshments.

A word to the wise: “Because of the amount of equipment and vehicles necessary to set up the village and the Livestrong Challenge Ride … B Street between Fourth and Fifth streets will be closed from Thursday, July 7, to Sunday, July 10,” Bowen said.

Upon completion of the July 9 Davis Farmers Market, C Street between Third and Fourth streets will be closed until 6 p.m. on July 10. Bowen notes that is the venue for the start/finish line. For more information, visit http://www.livestrong.org/DavisChallenge.

Saturday, July 16: Author Michelle Paisley will read from her novel “All In Her Head” at 7:30 p.m. at The Avid Reader, 617 Second St. in downtown Davis. For more information, call The Avid Reader at (530) 758-4040 or visit http://www.michellepaisley.com.
