The Davis Schools Foundation, the non-profit Davis educational foundation dedicated to funding equitable programs in Davis K-12 public schools, announced today that it is granting $100,000 to preserve instructional aides at elementary schools in Davis for the upcoming 2013-14 school year.

“For the 2012-13 school year, the Davis Schools Foundation made a grant of $330,330 that provided for elementary school instructional aides, junior high campus safety (vice principals), instructional materials for Da Vinci Charter Academy and high school counseling positions,” said Maria Ungermann, president, Davis School Foundation. “In the coming school year, the Davis Joint Unified School District will absorb the costs for junior high campus safety and high school counseling positions, and the Davis Schools Foundation will continue funding elementary instructional aides.”

“The Davis Schools Foundation continues to play a vital role in funding critical educational programs for DJUSD,” said Winfred Roberson, superintendent. “We thank the Davis Schools Foundation, Davis families, local businesses and all of the community donors that continue to contribute to our children’s educational successes.”

Elementary principals have reported how important the extra support of aides has been.

“Fantastic, indispensable — DSF’s grant last year helped lower teacher/student ratio and supported kids in our larger class sizes. We used aides during our block schedules so teachers could do small-group instruction.” said Mary Ponce, principal of Korematsu Elementary.

“Receiving funds from the Davis Schools Foundation allowed North Davis Elementary to sustain our current reading aides along with increasing their time to provide more intervention support for our students,” said Dr. Ramon Cusi, principal of North Davis Elementary.

“The Davis Schools Foundation grant for elementary aides paid for reading and math aides at our school,” said Heidi Perry, principal of Willett Elementary. “Having this support is invaluable. We are so pleased that this funding will continue for the next school year.”
