The Davis Teachers Association voted last week in favor of “Option A” for the 2014-15 school year — with Wednesday, Aug. 27, being the first day of classes. The last day of classes will fall on Thursday, June 11, 2015.

The 2014-15 calendar now will go back to the Davis school board for formal ratification — as a consent calendar item — during Thursday’s, April 17, meeting. Since Option A already was vetted as an acceptable option by the school board, formal approval on Thursday is likely.

The academic calendar is negotiated between the school district and the Davis Teachers Association. Earlier this year, the Davis school board offered the DTA two choices, both acceptable to the school board: Option A, which was essentially a status quo option; and Option B, which would have started the school year earlier, closer to the middle of August. The DTA polled its membership last week on the two options, with the voting period concluding on Friday.

Under Option A, school will be closed during the week of Thanksgiving (Nov. 24-28); winter break will run from Monday, Dec. 22, though Friday, Jan. 3; and spring break will run from Monday, March 23, through Friday, March 27.

The process of setting the dates for the 2014-15 school year has run behind schedule this year, and some parents (and teachers) have been anxious to pin down the dates because they are making plans for summer classes, camps, vacation trips and other activities.

As part of last week’s vote, the DTA also approved Option A calendars for 2015-16 (first day of school on Aug. 26, 2015; last day of school on June 9, 2016); and for 2016-17 (first day of school on Aug. 24, 2016; last day of school on June 8, 2017).
