Bob Dunning: Say hello to our ‘new’ city manager

WELCOME HOME, JOHN BOY … now that John Meyer has resigned his post at Kamp Katehi, can we call off the search for a new city manager? …

SIGN OF THE TIMES … is it just me or does the placement of certain lawn signs make it appear that Joe Krovoza and Robb Davis are joined at the hip? …

POINT SCORED … while all political candidates tend to speak in rosy generalities while promising a chicken in every pot (or in Davis, pot in every chicken), I did like what City Council candidate Robb Davis had to say in Wednesday’s Enterprise interview with Dave Ryan … wrote Ryan, paraphrasing Davis’ words: “The problem of too many changes goes back to a council that takes on too much at once, with the cause of its goals being too numerous and broad. Davis said the council should set five to eight objectives and narrow its focus, putting these priorities at the top of the agenda and communicating them to the city’s advisory commissions.” …

By that, I hope he means no surprises for the electorate once he raises his right hand and takes the oath of office … if you wish to focus on “five to eight” issues during your term in office, kindly let us know exactly what those five to eight issues are before we cast our ballots …

I mean, if you plan to give away money to Zipcar and hurt existing Davis businesses in the process, if you plan to spend $75,000 to hire out-of-town artists to paint a water tank, if you plan to take over PG&E and put Fifth Street on the Atkins Diet, if you plan to triple my water rates with a complicated structure even UC Davis math professors can’t understand, if you plan to spend a million bucks on a power study while our surface streets crumble like a stale snickerdoodle, please tell me ahead of time so I can vote for someone else …

A HELPING HAND … the good folks at the St. James Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul — recently recognized for their good works by none other than County Supervisor Don Saylor — will be holding a “Bundle Sunday” to aid those in need in Davis and the immediate area … actually, it will be a “Bundle Saturday” as well, with the St. Vincent de Paul donation truck parked at 1275 B St. to accept donations from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and again from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday …

Household items collected, whether new or used, can be distributed directly to those in need or sold at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in Sacramento (2275 Watt Ave.), with proceeds going to the needy … items needed include appliances, rugs, chairs, cookware, furniture of all types, computers, TVs, blankets and bedding, towels and linens, lamps, sporting goods, lawn furniture, books and toys … to arrange pickup of large items, call 916-972-1212 … for more information on this weekend’s event, call longtime Davis volunteer Dave Burmester at 530-756-3648 …

A STERLING PUNISHMENT … interesting that the NBA knew all about Donald Sterling’s serious sins for years, but took action against him only when it appeared the league itself would be embarrassed … interesting, too, that the Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP was more than willing to whitewash Sterling’s abominable record and shower him with honors in exchange for substantial donations, the amount of which are a closely guarded secret …

Hard to tell if the punishment fits the crime here, but as I understand it, Sterling can’t watch the Clippers on TV, can’t dream about the Clippers winning the NBA title, can’t bet on the Clippers in Las Vegas, and, above all, is banned from ever using toenail clippers …
