Shopping locally: Think of the children

TO MARKET, TO MARKET … now, I wish Westlake IGA well and I hope its recent town hall meeting with its Westside patrons was successful, but some of the reasons folks are coming up with to do their grocery shopping there are just downright goofy … for instance, one activist with too much time on his hands suggested that one reason to shop at Westlake IGA is that “Parents are comfortable sending their kids to the neighborhood grocery on an errand.” … as if their market is somehow safer for a kid on foot or on a bike than your market or my market … I mean, is he suggesting that the bad guys who might interrupt such a journey will realize the kid is on his way to Westlake and leave him alone? …

Trust me, folks, a kid who lives four blocks from Nugget has as good a chance of arriving there safely as does a kid who lives four blocks from Westlake … the only problem with shopping at the Nugget deli is that it’s guaranteed the kid will eat whatever it is he was sent for long before he gets back home …

MOTTO MANIA MARCHES ON … given that we’ll soon get to triple our pleasure when we take a drink of Davis water, our new city motto should be “Davis: It’s the Water.” … or “Davis: Where Ratepayers Are All Tapped Out” … since this is a gradual rate increase, whereby our rates will first double, then triple, the city plans to bring back the always popular Doublemint Twins to remind us to “Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun” when showering with Davis water …

A DATE BY ANY OTHER NAME … while the rest of the country celebrated Juneteenth on the correct day, June 19, for unexplained reasons the Davis celebration will be held on June 26 … since my brother in law was born in Amarillo, he introduced Juneteenth to our family nearly four decades ago, long before what started out as a strictly Texas observance spread to the West Coast … but, better late than never, I suppose …

A STAR IS BORN … River Cats fans were pleasantly surprised to hear the booming voice of Davis’ own Father Bong Rojas, pastor at St. James, belting out the national anthem before Sunday’s blistering hot Pacific Coast League game against the Fresno Grizzlies … Rojas prepped for his appearance by not studying attempts at “The Star-Spangled Banner” by Christina Aguilera and Roseanne Barr …

The good pastor did have the words clearly written on a sheet of paper in his left hand, but he never looked at them once … when he was done, he received a standing ovation, due in part, perhaps, to the fact folks generally stand for the national anthem …

SPEAKING OF PATRIOTIC WORDS … NBC sports has now admitted that it intentionally edited out the words “under God” and “indivisible” from the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance prior to Sunday’s final round of the U.S. Open golf championship … in a statement released Monday, NBC stated “Unfortunately, when producing the piece — which was intended to capitalize on the patriotism of having our national championship played in our nation’s capital — a decision was made by a small group of people to edit portions of the Pledge of Allegiance.” … and then, in the understatement of the century, NBC added “This was a bad decision.” …

Considering that 99.4 percent of those watching golf on television on a Sunday afternoon are Republicans, this was an especially bad decision … heads are no doubt rolling … fortunately for those who did the editing, the Good Lord is much more merciful than the NBC execs currently engaged in a CYA action …
