Trokanski pulls up all kinds of emotions

By
May 27, 2011 |

GENIUS AMONG US … several weeks ago I had the distinct pleasure of attending “The Tao of Isms” presented by the Pamela Trokanski Dance Theatre and the Third Stage … normally, dance is not my thing, but the dialogue that accompanied the various dance numbers was nothing short of brilliant … Pam Trokanski, the brains behind the production, needs to take this show on the road … the rest of the world doesn’t know what it’s missing …

What was presented alternated between witty, poignant, silly, serious, laughable, sentimental and incredibly moving … and at all times thoughtful … occasionally the audience experienced all those feelings and emotions at the same time … many folks in town have known of Pam’s talent for a long, long time, but “The Tao of Isms” was absolutely over the top … her best work ever … we’re blessed that she long ago decided to call Davis home …

THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING … scary stuff to think that Davis may one day soon have to share our two county supervisors with the unwashed masses from outside the city limits … given that there are five supervisors in a county of 200,000, the law requires that each one represent as close to 40,000 people as possible, without splitting families … based on the new census, Don Saylor’s 2nd District will have to take in 5,000 new residents, while Jim Provenza’s Eastside 4th District will have to go off in search of 1,500 or so out-of-towners …

Where these district newcomers will come from is anyone’s guess, but in Davis let’s just say we’re surrounded by W’s … head west looking for human beings and you’ll find Winters … head north and hit Woodland … head east and West Sacramento will be staring you in the face … and head south and introduce yourself to the fine folks in Willowbank …

On a county level, Davis’ political clout is diminishing … whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends on which “W” you call home …

THE READERS ALWAYS WRITE … my friend Greta on the Pretty House Streets says she’s “tired of reading your derisive comments on plastic bags in the Pacific Ocean.” … Greta, we don’t do that anymore … it just got too hard packing up all those bags and driving to Bodega Bay every weekend …

“How about dealing with the idea that plastic bags in dumpsites will be there for the next hundreds of years.” … how about dealing with the idea that responsible people have dozens of options in this totally relevant town to recycle those plastic bags … adds Greta, just getting warmed up: “How about a couple of columns encouraging recycling?” … Greta, dear, I’m trying to win a Pulitzer here …

“I’ll bet you could have fun encouraging people who throw away plastic bags to put their names on them. Then, their bag might meet up with one thrown away by their great-great-great-great-great grandchild.” … and what a moment that will be …

ZIPPING RIGHT ALONG … Dennis in North, North Davis (Woodland, actually) notes that “Zipcar is a really ‘sharing’ company because you can now buy shares of the company” in the stock market … and those shares come with gas, insurance, a free parking space and a city of Davis employee to service your account …

Adds Dennis: “If Davis is into treating everyone the same, one of these days we should find the E Street parking lot full of rental car spaces. Zipcar, Avis, Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Rent-a-Wreck,, Enterprise. There are so many companies in the same business as Zipcar, there probably won’t be any spaces left for shoppers.” …

Hey, a chicken in every pot, a Zipcar in every garage …
