"The liberals believe in free speech only if you are saying what only they deem to be appropriate." ... There are a lot of traditions in 'conservative' American cities where they ban adult-oriented businesses because they deem those enterprises "inappropriate." Moreover, many conservative Christian groups have successfully boycotted private businesses that they have deemed 'too pro-gay,' to the point where, due to the large number of boycotters, those companies closed up shop or changed their policies. It seems to me the words of the various big city mayors who have threatened to keep Chick-Fil-A from opening stores are quite wrong to do so, and if they followed through, those mayors should be removed from office for unconstitutional behavior. But I don't think conservative groups or right-wing mayors have a better record on this sort of nonsense.

Those who value free speech, be they liberal, conservative, or moderate, disagree with the mayors of Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco and their reactions to this issue. Jon Stewart's recent take on this issue complements Mr. Dunning's sage comments in today's column.
