What is the inside story about the recent Israeli election that returned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to office?
George Rooks will present “The Israel Election of 2015” in the Social Hall at Congregation Bet Haverim, 1715 Anderson Road, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23.
Rooks, a Davis resident who lives part of the year in Ashdod, Israel, and holds joint citizenship, has just returned from two months there. During his time in Israel, he and his wife, Hila, were heavily involved in the election by talking to potential voters, putting up campaign signs, attending rallies and voting.
Rooks will address several questions: What issues were most important to Israeli voters? What forces were aligned against Netanyahu? What role did the Obama administration play in the election? What were the turning points in the election? How did Netanyahu go from being a sure loser to a resounding winner in the span of just 10 days? Why were the Israeli polls so wrong? What will the next Israeli government probably look like?
Rooks is the chairman of the Israel Matters Committee at Congregation Bet Haverim. A retired UCD faculty member, he is a prolific author who writes a daily blog, Israelstreet.org, which is read in more than 100 countries around the world. He also is a regular contributor to the Times of Israel and an occasional contributor to the Jerusalem Post.
His talk is free and open to the public. For more information, email [email protected]
