Julie and Julie — Julie Cross and Julie Loke of the Davis Food Co-op — will offer a cooking lesson based on Julie Powell’s bestselling memoir, “Julie and Julia,” on Thursday, July 18, in Davis. Their class will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Blanchard Room of the Stephens Branch Library, 314 E. 14th St. in Davis.

In the book, the author resolves to reclaim her life by cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s legendary “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” within in a single year. Co-op staff will take their cue from this and demonstrate how to prepare simple yet elegant dishes based on seasonal produce. Local residents can see how it’s done, try samples and take home the recipes.

This event is part of the Yolo County Library’s 2013 Summer Reading Program.

“We’re excited about this year’s theme, ‘Reading is so Delicious,’ ” said Yolo County Librarian Patty Wong. “Connecting books and reading with the everyday activities of cooking and eating reminds us of how literacy is fundamental. We are pleased that we can partner with the Davis Co-op to help bring this connection to life.”

Can’t make the Davis program? This event will be repeated at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at the Esparto Regional Library, 17605 Yolo Ave. in Esparto, and at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Clarksburg Branch Library, 52915 Netherlands Road in Clarksburg.

No reservations are required. The Blanchard Room is accessible for people with disabilities. The free program is supported by the Friends of the Davis Library.
